The path to sobriety or better mental health is a lengthy and difficult process. Having someone to talk to is an important part of any recovery journey. While friends and family are a good and accessible option, talking with a trained professional can be even more beneficial. It may seem awkward to share so much personal information with someone you do not know, but there are counselors who are here to lend a listening ear while letting you speak openly and without the fear of being looked down on.
Person-centered counseling might be right for anyone who is struggling with addiction or a substance use disorder. Person-centered counseling allows you to talk in a non-judgmental and safe environment. If you think that person-centered therapy or any other type of addiction therapy in Virginia might be right for you or a loved one, contact Insight Recovery Centers at 703.592.6946.
What is Person-Centered Counseling?
Much like psychotherapy or talk counseling, person-centered counseling gives you the chance to speak about any problems you are having. The client is given a chance to talk to a counselor who will not judge and be empathetic. The counselor is there to listen to the client’s struggles and help them get to a solution independently. The three main goals of person-centered therapy are:
- Empathetic understanding – The counselor will be understanding of the client’s situation.
- Congruence – The counselor will act as genuinely as possible.
- Unconditional positive regard – The counselor will listen without judgment
The point in this specific type of counseling is that the client will eventually be able to work out their own solutions to their problems. While the counselor is there for guidance, the client will typically take the lead in each session. The goal for the client is to learn to trust their own judgment and learn what is best for them.
The Benefits of Person-Centered Counseling
Finding the right addiction counseling can be difficult. Every form of counseling has its advantages, and every person has their own opinions and experiences. Person-centered therapy might be beneficial for a number of reasons. First and foremost, its counselors will always listen without forming their own opinion of your struggles. They remain impartial and unbiased, providing a safe and non-judgmental environment.
A large part of person-centered counseling is about the client learning to trust themselves and the decisions that they make. By learning to make important decisions on your own, you also learn how to strengthen the relationship that you have with yourself. The client will also work on their relationships with others and how to build trust with them.
With person-centered counseling, the client will learn how to find a balance between the person they are and the person they wish to become. It is good to aspire to become a better person, but it may not be realistic to change everything about yourself. They will learn to become a better version of themselves rather than becoming a new person.
