Intensive Outpatient Program

Drug and alcohol treatment that fits into your life

An intensive outpatient program is an ideal alternative for individuals who need structured support for substance use or mental health challenges but cannot step away from work, school, or family responsibilities. Traditional residential rehab requires 30+ days away from home, which isn’t feasible for many. At Insight Recovery Centers, our IOP gives you the flexibility to stay engaged in daily life while receiving clinically robust care.

We are licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services and proud to be Joint Commission–accredited—a distinction held by only a few providers in the region.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An IOP is designed for individuals who need more than weekly therapy but don’t require inpatient monitoring. Sessions are offered on a set weekly schedule during the day or evening, with groups intentionally kept small (usually under 8 participants) to allow for personalized attention.

  • Ready to step down from residential care into a flexible outpatient model
  • Have completed withdrawal management, residential care, or a partial hospitalization program and need step-down support
  • Are reintegrating into work, school, or family life and want continued structure
  • Have relapsed and are seeking a structured re-entry point into care

What to Expect in IOP

At Insight Recovery Centers, IOP clients benefit from integrated care under one roof, with counselors and program directors collaborating daily. Your treatment plan will include:

  • Group counseling facilitated by multi-disciplinary providers
  • Individual counseling for personal goals and relapse prevention
  • Family counseling to strengthen communication and support systems
  • Drug and alcohol screening for accountability
  • Case management to coordinate care and resources
  • Multi-family groups that bring loved ones into the process
  • Continuing care groups for long-term stability

We believe recovery exists on a spectrum, and our care is flexible, not forced. For some, abstinence is the goal. For others, stability comes through moderation or harm reduction strategies. All paths to recovery are supported here.

Our integrated therapies treat the underlying issues like trauma, anxiety, or emotional dysregulation that drive substance use. These trauma-informed therapies include:

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily, it depends on the substance involved and how your body has come to depend on it. Many people enter our IOP directly, while others need medically supervised withdrawal management first if stopping a substance could be dangerous without clinical support. During your initial assessment, our clinical team evaluates your specific situation and, if medical detox is recommended, helps coordinate that step before you begin IOP. If you're stepping down from a residential program or PHP where detox is already complete, you can transition straight into IOP.

Most major insurance plans include coverage for intensive outpatient treatment, since it's a recognized, evidence-based level of care for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. As a Joint Commission–accredited provider licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services, we work with many insurers. Coverage amounts and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, so we recommend verifying your specific benefits before you start; Our admissions team can check this for you at no cost. Yes, that's one of the main reasons people choose IOP over residential treatment. The program runs on a set weekly schedule rather than full-time days, so you can keep your job, stay in school, or manage family responsibilities while getting care. We offer morning sessions (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:30am–12:30pm), evening sessions (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 5:30pm–8:30pm), and a virtual evening track on the same days, so you can pick the option that fits around your existing commitments.
